Frequently asked questions
How does duplicate and similar detection work?
Clean Up analyzes your photos entirely on your iPhone using Apple's Photos and Vision frameworks. Exact duplicates are matched pixel-for-pixel, while "similar" shots — like back-to-back burst photos — are grouped using on-device image similarity. Nothing is sent anywhere to do this.
Is anything uploaded or sent to a server?
No. Clean Up never uploads your photos or videos. There are no developer servers, no accounts, no analytics, and no trackers. All analysis and cleaning happens on your device. Full details are in the privacy policy.
How does deletion work? Where do deleted photos go?
When you confirm a cleanup, the deletion is performed through the system Photos delete confirmation — the same dialog you see in Apple's Photos app. The items are not erased instantly; they move to your Recently Deleted album, where they stay for about 30 days before being permanently removed. You can recover anything during that window.
Why is a particular photo marked as the "keeper"?
In each group of duplicates or similar shots, Clean Up suggests one photo to keep — usually the sharpest and highest-quality version, based on on-device analysis of focus and image quality. It is only a suggestion: you can pick a different keeper, or keep several, before you delete anything.
How do I actually free up space?
Deleting from Clean Up moves items to Recently Deleted. To reclaim the storage immediately, open Apple's Photos app → Recently Deleted → select → Delete to empty it. Otherwise iOS frees the space automatically after about 30 days.
What permissions does Clean Up need?
Clean Up needs Photo Library access with both read and write: read so it can analyze your photos and videos, and write so it can delete the items you choose. You can grant full access or limited access, and change it any time in iOS Settings → Clean Up. It does not request Camera, Microphone, Location, Contacts, or Tracking.
Does Clean Up work offline?
Yes. Clean Up does not require an internet connection. Scanning, grouping, and cleaning all happen entirely on your device. There is no account and no sign-in.
How does it find large videos?
Clean Up reads the file size of each item in your library and lists your largest videos by size, biggest first. Since videos are usually the biggest space hogs, removing a few can free gigabytes at once. You review each one before anything is deleted.
What is the Insights dashboard?
Insights gives you an on-device breakdown of what is using your storage — photos, videos, screenshots, and duplicates — plus a live estimate of how much space you can reclaim. It is calculated locally and shared with no one.
What are Memories (On This Day, Life Chapters, Forgotten Photos)?
Memories help you enjoy the photos worth keeping. On This Day shows what you captured on this date in past years, Life Chapters groups your library into meaningful periods, and Forgotten Photos resurfaces great shots buried deep in your library. All of it is built on-device.
Which iOS versions are supported?
Clean Up requires iOS 18 or later on iPhone. It uses modern on-device Photos and Vision capabilities that are available from iOS 18 onward.
How do I report a bug or contact support?
Email [email protected] with as much of the following as you can:
- What you were doing when the issue happened
- What you expected vs. what actually happened
- Your iPhone model and iOS version
- The Clean Up version (Settings → About)
- A screenshot or screen recording, if visual
The more specific the report, the faster the fix.
How do I request a refund?
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by the developer. To request one:
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
- Find Clean Up in your purchase history.
- Tap "Report a Problem" and choose "Request a refund".
Apple decides the outcome. If you have feedback about why you wanted a refund, an email is always welcome — it directly shapes the next version.
